About Tom Haselwood
Hello my name is Tom Haselwood and I would like to just a few moments to tell you about my self and my psychotherapy practice. In 1978 after moving from my home state of Colorado, I came to work for Disney World , where I met my wife of 29 years. We have one daughter currently residing in New York.
While working at Disney and owning my own small business, I went back to collage for my masters degree at the University of Central Florida. At first my goal was become a school counselor however soon it became clear that providing personal and family psychotherapy was more the direction I desired.
I received my Master in counseling from U.C.F. in 1988. With an emphasis on family and children therapy I went to work for five years in community based mental health clinics earning my state license and gaining a wide variety of mental health experiences. This experience reinforced my belief that “therapeutic talking” does much to help people with problems. It also began to be clear that the therapeutic relationship, that is the professional relationship between the therapist and client, is a very important part of the process.
In 1993 I began a private practice in Winter Park with an emphasis on working with people with relationship difficulties. Working in the past at community clinics where the style of therapy was based more on pathology and illness, with pressures for there to be a “quick fix”, I discovered that working this way did not produce lasting results. Looking to improve upon my skills I started an advanced self education program to learn psychodynamic relational therapy. In 1994 I co founded The Florida Organization for Relational Studies and was president for four years and am a current Board Member. The goal of F.O.R.S. is to provide advanced programs for therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists in relational methods and theories. I have an ongoing membership in The Tampa Bay Psychoanalytic Society and The Florida Mental Health Counselors Association. I am also certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors.
From time to time I teach a masters level courses on psychodynamics and psychotherapy at a local University. As an approved supervisor I work with new therapists who are getting their psychotherapy license. I currently attend more than 9 scheduled hours each month of study, therapist peer supervision, and reading groups. (This does not include my state required continuing education)
I have been the host of a therapist peer supervision group that solely focuses on working with couples. Although I am continually seeking the most helpful and effective therapy skills, nothing has taught me more than the experiences of working with many of my fine talented collages and very importantly working with over the many hundreds of clients I have had the privilege to know. In 2003 I moved my practice form winter Park to Metro West. (See location)
I very much looking forward to speaking with you.
Thank you
