About Therapy
Depression, Anxiety, poor self-esteem and other negative emotional states can be directly related to our relationship dynamics and patterns. With the help of therapy and perhaps some medications many who suffer from these symptoms have a good chance of improving their positive life experience. It has been my experiences that by working toward healthy relationships one can at the very least make these symptoms less problematic. One of the ways to improve relationships is to work with our emotions.
Emotions:
Emotions help us adapt and interact with the world around us in other words: Emotions are our friends. Problems arise when we avoid them, over or under regulate them, or become over stressed when we stay to long with negative ones. Psychotherapy works by helping understand our relationship with our emotions and improve on our regulation skills.
More on therapy:
Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the personalities of the therapist and client, and the particular problems you bring forward. When choosing a therapist you may be more comfortable with one that is very directive, gives you assignments and advice. Or you may find more value in having the therapist help you determine your direction and focus on developing your strengths that will lead to self-empowerment. I feel the latter to be more productive over the long term. (See FAQ's for more)
In my opinion it is important that you feel comfortable with the therapist first and then their techniques.
